Flight case with removable foam, £15 from Maplins.
Global Solar flexible solar panel, approximately £500.
Electrical/Gaffer/Duck tape can be very useful e.g. when you forget your microphone stand!

Mohammed Musa interviewing Lord Moolu of Ukula at his home in Moolu, February 2008.
Stuart McGill interviewing Umar Magaji, chief of Mazarko, at his house in Mazarko, February 2007.
Markus Yabani recording colour terms.
Scanning a document in the National Archives, Kaduna. Because the room was so dark, and outside was too windy, I had to buy four desk lamps from a local electrical store. You can see the tripod positioned against the wall - the camera (which is of course being used to take this photo) was pointing directly downwards above the paper. To use this technique you need a reversible tripod.
Children crowding round the hut entrance. Privacy can be hard to find during fieldwork!
Fieldwork can also involve unexpected risks!
